The Cost of the Cold War: A Nations Generation

Image
Entry #6: The Cost of the Cold War: A Nations Generation \On my way up to Colorado to visit some relatives I made it past Flagstaff  and into the start of the Navajo Nation, when I started to notice quite a few concrete caps embedded into the ground, and quite a few open holes around it as well. Finally I decided to pull over and take a closer look at one of them, and as I had expected it was a mine, quite a common sight in Arizona; however, upon closer inspection I soon realized that it was a Uranium mine and little did I know that uranium mines on the Navajo Nation have had a dark history spanning all the way back into the 1940's . After the second world war the demand for uranium by the Federal government took off and the atomic energy commission declared that it would be the sole purchaser of uranium in the U.S. Yet instead of mining it themselves they leased it to contractors and soon over 1000 mines had been created on the Navajo Nation through leasing the land. ...

The Persuasive Power of "The Most Interesting Man in the World"

Entry #3: The Persuasive Power of  "The Most Interesting Man in the World" In the series of commercials for Dos Equis beer, titled "The Most Interesting Man in the World", its marketing genius relies on strong pathos to sell its product--and, selling it does, through emotional appeal and subtle humor.   The advertisements feature "The Most Interesting Man in the World", a gentleman.  He is all that an older gentleman might see himself as:  distinguished with perfectly styled, graying hair and beard, in expensively cut suits from expensive materials.  The commercials take the viewer through three past-life moments of "The Most Interesting Man in the World" in which he demonstrated great machismo and effectively proves how he became "The Most Interesting Man in the World."  Each commercial then cuts to a present day 'Most Interesting Man' (MIM), settled, who obviously reaps the reward of those past macho eve...

The Poisoning of Northeastern Arizona

Entry #4: The Poisoning of Northeastern Arizona image from Grand canyon tour image by azcentral As I drive out of the city I'm always taken back by the beauty of Northeastern Arizona as any outdoors type of person is, it's a sandbox like no other encompassing the Painted dessert, Humphrey's peak, beautiful rolling grasslands and forest, but also a natural wonder of the world the Grand Canyon.Yet this beauty for all it's worth may be tainted for the generations to come. In 2015 an abandoned mine in Colorado called the Gold King mine leaked out three million gallons of toxic waste into the Colorado river as reported by the E.P.A, a number that was three times the expected damage. The New York Times reported that "For years, the Gold King mine has leaked toxic waste at a rate of 50 to 250 gallons a minute." And rather then finding the source of the leak, the agency instead hired workers to loosely pack-in dirt and so called "material". No...

The Problem with achieve60az

Entry #5: The Problem with achieve60az With our state becoming one of the most booming tech giants in the U.S the education of our citizens is falling behind in the race to secure better jobs, and better opportunities. In response to this Gov. Doug Ducey plans to in act achive60az, a plan that would see to the increase of Arizona citizens with college degrees to 60 percent by 2030. Great news if your a college student; however, a more skilled workforce would see to a decrease jobs, and ultimately lower wages for the work force, with the only benefit going to college educators and universities. With the cost of education on the rise and two thirds of the jobs in Arizona requiring a some form of education other than a high school diploma by 2020. Gov. Ducey's plan seems like a god-send to most, and certainly as a college student there is a reassuring feeling that within the next fifteen years there will be a need for college degrees. Yet there is an underlying problem with Duc...

Arizona's Mexican Wolf

Image
Entry #2 Arizona's Mexican Wolf http://www.arizona-leisure.com/big-lake.html Recently I took a drive to the White Mountains on an over night fly fishing trip, the open country of Arizona's most eastern part of the state is truly breath taking with blue spruce and aspen doting the landscape, and rolling hills enveloping the rest. There are many lakes and streams regularly stocked will trout, plenty of camp grounds, activities for the family such as berry picking and the White Mountain Apache tribe also maintains the health of the forest. With the help of the U.S Forestry service the White Mountain Apache Tribe also maintains roads and trails for civilian use. However the drive from Phoenix to the white mountains will take the average driver about 5-6 hours, but the trip is well worth it! As you drive, the transition from desert to rocky mountains, flat plains and finally forest is truly the over looked beauty of our state. Yet to most onlookers there is another hidden beau...

Love Of Outdoors

Entry #1 Blogger Practice ENG102  Hello everyone, my name is Michael Hernandez and i'm studying wildlife biology at GCC. I love the outdoors and consider myself an avid hunter, but I also love playing the piano and painting landscapes. Anytime I go out hunting, or just to drive around the forest, my canvas is right there with me. Instead of a camera I believe that in order to capture the beauty of nature it needs to be passionately and meticulously recorded with your heart and mind. Because of my hobbies, my goal for this blog is to be mostly informative on hunting techniques, the conservation of nature, why is hunting ethical, and the benefits of being an outdoors men.
